06 Jul / 12:00 / Grajski trg square / Street theatre

In the middle of the square is a cage. The door of the cage is open. The cage is empty. One by one the authorities arrive. They try to make sense of the situation. They are men of enormous quality, great dedication and experience. And as the investigation unfolds, they are increasingly baffled: Where did this cage come from? How did it get here? Who (or what) opened the door? What was inside the cage? Could that thing be dangerous? And … where is that thing now???

The Cage is the perfect setting for a clown, who can use it to create a naive and downright silly piece of street theatre. Physical visual humour, aimed straight at the funny bone. However, just as in the works of Samuel Becket, the clownesque is also a subterfuge. Through the naive eyes of the clown, the play takes a look at some very serious issues, especially at fear – the Fear of the unknown. When does it take hold of us, how does it take over, and at what point can it be used as a weapon to control us?

The Cage is a play inspired by George Orwell's Animal Farm and 1984 and by personal experiences, especially the looming Credit Crunch and the War against Terror.

In the words of Franklin Delano Roosevelt: “The only thing we have to fear is fear itself.”
