Sounds of Africa

Yesterday, we got the chance to see the African star Stewart Sukuma and his band Nkhuvu. Stewart Sukuma & Banda Nkhuvu performed at the festival 2 years ago and we decided to invite them to perform again. Stewart Sukuma is one of the most popular African musicians. He was born in Mozambique at the south-eastern Africa.

In Mozambique, the most popular style of music is marrabenta, which is originally urban dance music. The word marrabenta comes from the word rabentar, which means “to break”. That refers to the cheap strings that torn quickly, since in Africa, the materials the instruments were made of, were not as good as in other parts of the world.

The winner among this year’s performers was with no doubt Janez Dovč that will perform 5 times by the end of the festival. In different music casts, of course: Na juriš in the mood!, Sounds of Slovenia, Dovč & Gombač, Marko Grobler quartet and Courtyards of Maribor. Welcome at the festival, Janez.

Maja Keuc, our representative at this year’s Eurovosion Song Contest, also performed more than once. Yesterday, she performed with her band Soulcrew and filled the area in front of Večer stage, and on Saturday, you will get the chance to hear her wing with the band Papir at the Central stage at the Drava river just before the fireworks.

One of the highlights of yesterday’s night was also the performance Glissssendo, which took place at the Trg Leona Štuklja square at 22.30. The French group Fanfare Le S.N.O.B floated across the square while performing live music on their instruments.
